Year 2

Welcome to Year 2

Welcome back! We hope you had a lovely break and we are very much looking forward to working with you all over the coming year.

In Year 2, we have two classes- Wilby class, who is taught by Miss. Jones and Ecton Class, taught by Mr. Reed. We are very lucky to have Mrs. Harkett and Miss. Bunker as teaching assistants in Year 2.

We also have Miss. Russell working in Year 2 as a 1:1 Learning Assistant.

Mrs. Lightfoot, Mr. Dalton will be covering Year 2 on a Tuesday afternoon so you will see their faces at the end of the day. Ecton class will also be covered by Miss. Willars on a Wednesday and Thursday afternoon.

In Year 2, we aim to encourage the children to be as independent and responsible for their belongings and their learning as possible. It is their responsibility to put their reading book and journal into the book box every morning, where their journals will be collected in and monitored for their reading.

Reading in Year 2

The children will be given a new reading book on a Monday and Thursday. Although the books will only be changed on these days, it is expected that they read their book every day and that their journal has a comment related to their reading and that the journal has been signed by an adult at home to show that they have read each day too. The children might like to read and explore other books and stories that they have at home too and this can be recorded in their journals also.

The children will need both their journal and reading book in school every day, as they will have opportunities to read and enjoy books throughout the week at school. It is expected that although the children’s reading books won’t be changed every day, they still aim to read every day at home to achieve their 5 home reads a week. They will be rewarded for their 5 weekly reads.

My Maths Weekly Homework

On the inside cover of your child’s journal, you will find login information for your child to access their My Maths homework. There is also a letter in your child’s bookbag explaining how this can be accessed online at home. My Maths is accessible on most devices including laptops and tablets.

Your child’s homework for My Maths will be set on a Friday and we expect the children to have completed their set tasks by the following Friday.

The tasks set, support the work that we are covering in school for Maths on a weekly basis.

Miss. Jones and Mr. Reed will be monitoring who has completed their My Maths weekly homework and the children will be rewarded for the completion of their tasks each week.

Additional information

PE will be on Tuesday and Friday. Please ensure that on these days your child has their PE kit in school, long hair must be tied back and earrings removed. Staff are not able to remove earrings for the children.

In Year 2, the children still have the opportunity to have a free healthy fruit snack during their morning break, which is provided for them. They are also allowed to bring a water bottle into school to have during break time too. Please ensure that their water bottle is named, as many of the children have similar bottles.

Finally, please could you ensure that all of your child’s uniform, including P.E kits, coats and any other items are named. This enables the children to be much more independent and responsible in looking after their property and we can return items back to the right child.

If you have any questions regarding anything to do with the school day or your child’s learning, please feel free to speak to a member of the Year 2 Team.
